The First Volume of the First American Jazz Discography Index To Jazz by Orin Blackstone Owned and Annotated by Important Collector E Payson Clark Jr

Blackstone, Orin. Index To Jazz Vol I. The Record Changer. Fairfax, VA. 1946.

Volume I of “Index to Jazz” the first attempt at an American jazz discography, listing all records of interest to jazz records released from 1917 to 1944, compiled by future New Orleans Records founder Orin Blackstone. Building off the examples created by French and English music writers, this was the first American attempt to catalog a uniquely American art form, as well as to provide collectors with a full list of records they might be missing. The current volume (the first of an eventual four) lists artists from A to E.

This copy was owned by E Payson Clark Jr (1925 – 2004) an important early Jazz enthusiast, collector, and archivist from Rochester, NY, who built a radio antenna on the roof of his parents home at age 13 in order to listen to Jazz at a distance, tuning into performances and broadcasts from New York, Chicago, and London. Later a student at Cornell, he was inspired by Professor Marshall Stearns, who went on to found the Institute of Jazz Studies and author the pioneering history text, The Story of Jazz, to preserve and record live performances. Later a prominent lawyer by profession, Clark would remain an avid jazz fan for his entire life, traveling the country and to Europe to attend conventions and concerts, helping to establish and fund festivals, and corresponding with numerous musicians. His collected papers are held at the University of Chicago.
