Description

First Edition of The Entertaining and Thorough History of the Book Curse Tradition,  Anathema By Marc Drogin

Drogin, Marc. Anathema! Medieval Scribes and the History of Book Curses. Allanheld and Schram. New Jersey. 1983.

A very good copy of Anathema by Marc Drogin, an excellent history of book curses, tracking the practices’ development and variations from the medieval scribal tradition through the 19th century. In the pre-modern era, book curses were commonly used in Europe to protect books, libraries, and their content (sometimes serving as a kind of copyright), and were most often written by monks. Well illustrated and entertainingly written, the text is likely the best single history on this obscure occult subtopic and served as a major source for Ellipsis’ own chapbook treatment of the subject, Little Book of Book Curses, which distills the work of Drogin and others as part of Andrew Lenoir’s original observations on the relationship between book curses and folk Catholic saint and psalm magic.
