Original 1917 Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin from the Library of William John Sinclair , formerly part of the paleontology collection at Princeton with specialized bookplate.

Original survey and bibliography of literature and linguistic and cultural analysis of the native groups of the Tierra del Fuego and surrounding areas of Argentina and Chile including an overview of religious beliefs and ritual practices of the Yaghan, Chonos, Selk’ham and Kawésqar (given here as Ona and Alacaluf, respectively) people compiled by Catholic Priest and anthropologist John M Cooper and published as part of the Bureau of American Ethnology’s reports. Includes coverage of lore and native animism with information on totems, dreams, prayers, prophecy, nature spirits, taboos, death and burial customs, as well as magic and medicine.

This copy was originally part of the personal library of Professor William John Sinclair , geologist, vertebrate paleontologist and Princeton University professor. Following Sinclair’s death in 1935 his widow donated his entire collection to the university and commissioned the specialized bookplate on the front pastedown to mark his contributions to Princeton’s library.

 

8vo, 233pp, green cloth boards with gilt spine. Small bruise to front board bottom edge, corners and spine ends bumped. Front pastedown marked with original Sinclair ex-libris stamp covered by Sinclair Library bookplate, bleed from original stamp to first free endpaper. Binding weak ahead of title page. Title page embossed with Princeton university stamp. Includes large folding map of Tierra del Fuego with partial 1″ tear at margin with page. Pages clean. Very good condition.
