Number 9 of 220 copies of a facsimile edition of the 1465 Flemish Canticum Canticorum (The Song of Songs) produced for the Marees Gesellschaft (1917-1929) among the most noted European fine art printers of the interwar years.
Founded, according to the MOMA, “as a collaboration between influential art historian and critic Julius Meier-Graefe and avant-garde publisher Reinhard Piper, named after the now largely forgotten German realist painter Hans von Marées (1837-1887), whom Meier-Graefe revered. As a special imprint [they] issued lavishly produced illustrated books and portfolios”. In addition to historical facsimiles, they also famously issued works illustrated by Gaugin, Van Gogh, Matisse, Max Beckmann, and Oskar Kokoschka.
According to the British Museum, Ganymed – named for von Marees final painting – was “founded in the early years of the 20th century by Bruno Deja, a printer, and the art historian Julius Meier-Graefe (q.v.), director of Marées Gesellschaft (q.v.) for which it printed much work.”

16 hand-colored plates + title and colophon. Half parchment bound with string. Boards darkened with wear to edges and corners. Bottom portion of parchment string detached but present. Wear to spine leather and losses to board edges. Pages toned with some darkening to margins. Good.
