First American edition of Hunger the most famous novel by Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun (1859 – 1952), originally published in Norway in 1890 followed by a first British edition of the same year.

Hunger (Sult in Norwegian) is the semi-autobiographical story of a young writer driven to madness by poverty induced starvation trying to make ends meet in late 19^th century Kristiania (modern day Oslo). Noted for its ground breaking examination of psychology through first person stream of consciousness narration providing a view of urban life and the emerging modern world with touches that are both disturbing and surreally humorous.

This first American edition was released the same year that Hamsun received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920.
