Signed and Hand Edited Limited First Edition of The Gothic Fantasy Dramatic Poem Lilith By Poet George Sterling from 1919

Sterling, George. Lilith, A Dramatic Poem. AM Robertson. San Francisco. 1919. #105 of 300 copies.

First edition of Lilith by George Sterling , a dramatic poem in blank verse recounting the struggles of Prince Tancred with the titular demon of temptation, Lilith. Widely regarded as one of Sterling’s best works, the drama has never been performed and was regarded by Sterling as impossible to stage.

A native of Sag Harbor, New York, Sterling moved to California becoming a founding member of the Bohemian Club and one of the original inhabitants of the Carmel-by-the-Sea artist’s commune alongside the likes of Mary Austin, Jack London, Sinclair Lewis, and others. Mentored by Ambrose Bierce (with whom he wrote The Wine of Wizardry in 1909), Sterling was also a correspondent and model for a young Clark Ashton Smith. A noted free spirit, free love enthusiast, and quasi-pagan, he committed suicide in 1926.

Reprinted in 1920 by the Book Club of California in 350 copies and then again in 1926, this first edition was limited to 300 signed and numbered copies, only the latter 150 of which were offered for sale. The first 150 were presented by Sterling as gifts, including some with his hand corrections. This triple signed example is inscribed to Addie Stolp (1871 – 1933), a noted California socialite.

110pp. Perfect bound in brown paper wraps. Title and author gilt to front. Wear to corners and edges. Spine ends bumped with splitting at joints. Past creasing lower front corner. Warmly inscribed by Sterling on first free endpaper, with second inscription from Sterling on dedication page. Numerous hand corrections from Sterling throughout. Numbered and signed by Sterling on the colophon. Sticker ghost back endpaper. Good.
