Description

The Fall Of The House Of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe . Cheshire House : New York, 1931. Illustrated by Abner Epstein. Limited edition , #922 of 1200 copies.

A very well-preserved copy of the celebrated 1931 limited edition of Poe ‘s The Fall of The House of Usher with wood cut illustrations from the surrealist Abner Epstein, published elsewhere as “Abner Dean”.

Beloved since its first appearance in Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine in 1839, Usher remains a favorite for horror fans and psychoanalysts alike. Following off illustrated Poe editions with work by Aubrey Beardsley in the 1890s and Harry Clarke in 1919, this wonderful limited edition from Cheshire House pairs Poe ‘s words with a custom type face designed by artist Richard Ellis and six of Epstein’s arresting modern woodcuts. Published only three years after the first French attempt at a film adaptation in 1928, these striking engravings could almost be excerpts from The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.

8vo, 31 + 1pp, woven burlap “Monk’s cloth” boards with title and author plated affixed to front board and spine. Spine sunned with some wear to top spine and fore board edges. Pages toned but clean. Hand numbered on pg [32]. Good condition. Original slipcase, missing lower wall, included, poor condition.
