A good, vintage copy of the hoodoo classic The Mystery of The Long Lost 8th , 9th and 10th Books of Moses , written by pseudonymous author “Henri Gamache”, also credited with writing The Master Book of Candle Burning and three other famous monographs in the 1940s. Despite the pen name’s disputed origins — speculated by some to have actually been a female Jewish ghostwriter– the texts remain particularly popular in the African American conjure tradition, particularly for their promotion (most evident in this text) of Moses as a Black African magician, building off ideas popularized by Marcus Garvey. Part grimoire, part narrative, the text provides stories about and perspectives on Moses not present in Exodus as well as various charms, rituals, and “nostrums” for love, dream sending, treasure finding and other magical operations some of which are connected to the earlier folk German grimoire known as The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses.

 

8vo, [104]pp + 5 ads, staple bound printed wrap pamphlet. Some soiling to front and back wrap, especially at front fore corner. Corners bumped. Back lower fore corner split. Rubbing bottom spine edge. Minor soiling to bookblock. Title page soiled along top fore corner edge. Pages clean. Illustrated with various diagrams and 5 full pages of illustrated period advertisements. Good condition.
