New Society Packet. Movement For A New Society. Philadelphia, PA. Undated. [c. 1980?]

An original publication laying out the organizing principles and operations of the Movement For A New Society, a Quaker anti-war group turned national network of anarchic urban communes launched in Philadelphia in the 1970s.

Founding members included Quaker peace activists and Lawrence Scott and George Willoughby, particularly interested in the concept of “utopia” and the ways in which it could be realized through collective action, and Bill Moyer, social justice activist and organizer who was deeply involved in the anti-war movement of the 1960s and 1970s. A key figure in the 1966 Chicago Open Housing Movement prior to his involvement with the Movement For A New Society, Moyer went on to become a leading proponent of “strategic nonviolence” or non-violent direct action.

Opposed to “enforced conformity and powerlessness”, the Movement For A New Society advocated for the development of mutual aid networks to build an anti-capitalist, utilitarian society. The text is illustrated throughout by the artists Jan Baskett, Bonnie Acker, Mark Fisher and Lezcavo
