Description
Dual Binding of Rare Works “On Mediums” and “On Science” by Early English Swedenborg Follower Rev John Clowes
Clowes, Rev. John. On Mediums; Their Divine Origin and Important Uses Especially In Their Instrumentality To Promote The Regeneration and Salvation of Mankind. F. Davis. Manchester. 1814.
On Science, Its Divine Origin, Operation, Use, and End Together With Its Varius Interesting Properties, Qualities, and Characters. Nanfan and Davis. Manchester. 1809.
A unique dual binding of rare first edition works by early English Swedenborgian Rev John Clowes (1743 – 1831), founder of the Society of Gentlemen, which sought to promote and disseminate the ideas of Emmanuel Swedenborg within the Anglican church. Clowes is notable for making Manchester the center of Swedenborgian publishing in the English speaking world, promoting both the works of Swedenborg and his own tracts.
The present works include a scriptural defense of mediumship as a means of divine revelation and a treatise “On Science” which may more properly be characterized as a treatise on knowledge and understanding and how it is part of God’s divine inspiration in man for the perfection and liberation of mankind.
This copy was formerly part of the collection of the Brooklyn New Church Free Library and was possibly once part of the collection of Prof. Charles E West of Brooklyn whose copy of On Mediums was auctioned by Bangs in 1889. This is the last time the work was sold at auction per RBH.
Two copies of this edition of On Mediums and One copy of On Science found in OCLC as of March 2025.
