This issue of the Palo Alto based underground newspaper Peninsula Observer features coverage of the then on-going 1968 elections with jokes about assassinations following off the ten-recent death of Bobby Kennedy including a feature lampooning the cost of the president’s armored car. Also included is coverage of a September “Be-In” with an explanation of the emerging counterculture practice as well as the conviction of Black Panther Huey Newton for the death of police officer John Frey (for which he was subsequently exonerated). Also features coverage of the development of Redwood Shores in Foster city, original poetry from Eldridge Cleaver, and a possible joke story about Mao being elected chairman of the Berkeley Political Science Department.
