Lovecraft, H.P. Michaud, Marc, ed. First Writings Pawtuxet Valley Gleam 1906 (With Forward by Ramsey Campbell). Writings in the United Amateur 1915 – 1925 (Forward by TED Klein). Writings In The Tryout (Forward by S.T. Joshi). The Conservative Complete 1915 – 1923 (Forward by Frank Belknap Long). Necronomicon Press. West Warwick, RI. 1976 – 77.
Collection of early limited edition Necronomicon Press publications reprinting the early (and largely previously uncollected) writings of HP Lovecraft in the local and amateur press, including many (often pagan) poems, his controversial opinion pieces surrounding WWI, and his first known published work, an astronomical forecast for Rhode Island for July 1906 written when he was 15 years old. Many of the articles are reproduced in facsimile from their original appearances, with some of the writings from The Tryout even including corrections and commentary Lovecraft made by hand.
Each volume boasts a forward from a Lovecraftian notable, including important scholar S.T. Joshi, horror writers TED Klein (author of The Dark Gods) and Ramsey Campbell (author of many titles and editor of New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos), as well as pulp writer and personal friend of Lovecraft, Frank Belknap Long (1901 – 1994).
All numbered limited editions, the Pawtuxet Gleam collection is numbered 405 of 500, the United Amateur collection is 302 of 500, the Conservative collection is numbered 254 of 2500, and the Try Out collection is 260 of 1000 copies.
Per Joshi’s bibliography, the collection of writings from The Conservative is “one of the strangest publications in the history of Lovecraft studies”. Though it is claimed on the colophon it is one of the 2500 second edition copies, following a 1976 first edition of 50 copies, Joshi states that there are “only 400 (if that many) total copies of both states”.
Joshi, 1-A-68, 1-A-70, 1-A-71, 1-A-76.
4 vol. 47pp, 146pp, 59pp, 124pp. Staple bound folios. Printed wraps. Minor wear to corners and edges. Minor soiling to wraps of Writings in the United Amateur with crease to back wrap top fore corner. All hand numbered on colophon. All but Writings in the Tryout signed on colophon. Very good.
