A Karl Armstrong “Care Package” from Take Over Noted Underground Newspaper of Madison , WI in Support of Anti-War Bomber

Take Over. Vol 3. No 1. Madison, WI. Jan 10, 1973.

This issue of Take Over, one of Madison, Wisconsin’s longest running underground newspapers, features a Gilbert Shelton cover, a two page story on the growing drug crisis, and coverage of the Lessard Decision which declared local laws about commitment of the mentally ill unconstitutional. Most notably, however, it covers the on-going imprisonment of former University of Wisconsin-Madison student Karl Armstrong who in 1970 set off a bomb inside the university’s Sterling Hall where the Army Mathematics Research Center was housed causing significant damage and one death. Captured while on the lam in Canada in 1972, Armstrong was sentenced to 23 years in prison, of which he eventually served 7. This issue comes with a photocopy letter and several news clippings provided by the Take Over editors in support of Armstrong and his release.

20pp, folded newsprint folio with color exterior wrap. Minor soiling at fold. Pages toned but clean. Very good. Also includes 3pg photocopy of letter and newsclipping, as well as 4 pgs of related coverage from the Daily Cardinal. Good condition.
