Illustrated Guide To Witchcraft, Ghosts, and Demons In European and American History, The Devil In Britain and America by John Ashton

Ashton, John. The Devil in Britain and America. Ward & Downey Limited. Adelphi [ London ]. 1896. First Edition.

Extensive history of witchcraft and apparent diabolic intervention in the United States, Great Britain and Europe including coverage of local lore concerning devils, demons, and familiar spirits, popular folk ballads, and accounts of popular rumors as well as historical witch trials and poltergeist incidents. In addition to covering the Salem and Lancashire Witch Trials (among others), the text also includes many incidents surrounding the English Civil War—like the Just Devil of Woodstock and the legends concerning Prince Rupert’s dog Boy—as well as the Demon Drummer of Tedworth and many other stories.

Profusely illustrated and providing a robust appendix of its sources, The Devil in Britain and America by John Ashton is also noted by Walter Hart Blumenthal, famous scholar and book collector, in his essay “Diabolica: Poisonous Pens and Satanic Books” for its frontispiece reproducing “the only known specimen of the Devil’s handwriting.”
