Originally founded as The Mother’s Magazine in Utica, New York in 1833 by Abigail Goodrich Whittelsey, this volume is one of three published under the name The Mother’s Magazine and Family Journal between 1850 – 51 edited by Mrs. Elizabeth M Sewell, wife of Rev Robert Sewell, following Whittelsey’s departure and Myron Finch’s rise as publisher in 1848. A collection of writings on prayer and religious questions, education, homemaking, childcare and music with 12 well illustrated plates.

This copy was part of the personal library of Vermont’s 44th governor, Levi K Fuller (1841 – 1896). A trained machinist and executive at the Estey Organ Company with more than 100 patents to his name, Fuller also served as the director of the Brattleboro Savings Bank and on the board of the Brattleboro Free Library in addition to his two year 1892 – 1894 gubernatorial term.

8vo, 384pp, three quarter bound with marbled paper boards. Corners bumped. Wear to leather at spine ends, edges and board fore corners. Front spine hinge weak but holding. Staining from leather binding to pastedowns and endpapers. Bookplate for library of Levi K Fuller on front endpaper. Pencil mark crossing out Volume XVIII on title page and again on first table of contents, changing the volume to I or XI. Pages toned but clean apart from occasional foxing. Includes 12 engraved plates.
