First edition of the highly influential extreme horror anthology Splatterpunks, featuring stories from icons like Joe R Lansdale, Clive Barker, George RR Martin, Richard Christian Matheson, Rex Miller, John Skipp and others which helped codify the qualities of splatterpunk fiction.
The term, “splatterpunk”, like cyberpunk, was likely coined at the 1986 World Fantasy Convention to describe the then emerging horror subgenre noted for its no-holds-barred approach to violence, gore, and extremity. Though derided by the likes of Psycho-author and Lovecraft protégé Robert Bloch who argued, “there is a distinction to be made between that which inspires terror and that which inspires nausea,” Splatterpunk, like the broader 1980s slasher film trend, appears to have been a social reaction to conformity and the anxieties of the period, notably the threat of nuclear war, racial tensions, the growth of wealth inequality, the hollowing of the American social structure, and the emergence of the epidemics of AIDS and addiction under the Reagan and Bush administrations. The genre itself has faded from past prominence, but its influence continues today through the emergence of viral self-published extreme horror like the works of Aaron Beauregard and even the surprisingly popular modern subgenre of “extreme” dark romance.
This copy is inscribed by the editor Paul Sammon to Evil Dead and Spider-Man film director Sam Raimi, the same year as the release of Darkman and ahead of the release of Evil Dead III Army of Darkness. The inscription reads, “For Sam Raimi, fellow s-punk / See you in Hell.”

Inscribed to Sam Raimi on half title verso, “For Sam Raimi, fellow s-punk / See you in Hell”. Original dust jacket with wear to edges and corners. Some minor chipping to edges. Some interior toning to edges and spine. Very good in good.
