Chrysis — written by Aeneas Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius II– is a one act Latin play written during his early years at the court of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III during the schism between Pope Eugenius IV and the antipope Felix V is a renaissance sex comedy about two prostitutes (one of whom is named Chrysis) and two different pairs of prospective lovers from the priesthood and nobility, respectively.

This edition of Piccolomini ‘s Chrysis was organized and introduced by French politician and administrator Andre Boutemy and was published the year before the Nazi occupation and the rise of the Vichy government in which he worked. This copy is inscribed by Boutemy to a friend, “In remembrance of good evenings passed at the Fondation des Etats-Unis” (a still extant Franco-American cultural center in Paris).

 

 

8vo, 51pp, perfect bound in printed paper wraps. Corners bumped with minor warping, wear to wrap edges. Reading creases and wear to spine worst at top end with minor back hinge separation. Deckled edges. Inscribed by translator on half-title page. Page 50 missing top fore corner. Very good condition.
