Foundational English Ifa Text Awo Ifa On Traditional African Esoteric Theory and Practice

Fatunmbi, Awo Fa’Lokun. Awo: Ifa and The Theology Of Orisha Divination. Original Publications. Bronx, NY. 1992.

Scarce pioneering English language treatise on the Ifa esoteric tradition of the Yoruba diaspora, including insights on cosmology as well as practical advice and instruction on ancestor practice, shrine building, and cowrie shell divination. The author, Awo Fa’Lokun Fatunmbi is well known for her chapbooks on various Orisha also published by the Bronx-based occult publisher Original Publications.

At its core, Ifa is based on the belief that there is a divine force known as Olodumare (or Olorun), who is the supreme deity and creator of all things. Olodumare is believed to have delegated the power of divination and communication with humans to Orunmila, also known as Ifa, who is considered the Orisha of wisdom, knowledge, and divination. This text succinctly expresses the system of consulting the Orisha and ancestral spirits as well as the Odu teachings, serving as a guide to practical wisdom and occultism and exploring spiritual life.
