HP Lovecraft Gives A Eulogy for Conan Creator Robert E Howard In Fantasy Magazine

Schwartz, Julius. Fantasy Magazine No 38. New York. September 1936.

The fourth anniversary issue of Fantasy Magazine, edited by future DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz and Fate Magazine creator Ray Palmer, featuring H.P. Lovecraft’s elegiac essay “In Memoriam Robert Erwin Howard”, mourning the loss of the Conan The Barbarian creator in June 1936.

Although frequent correspondents and collaborators on what would become the Cthulhu Mythos, Lovecraft and Howard never met in person. Unlike Lovecraft, who was noted throughout his life for misanthropic depression, Howard presented himself as a vibrant and adventure seeking “man’s man”, which made his death by suicide in 1936 even more difficult for his colleagues to comprehend. In this eulogy Lovecraft suggests that the skillful descriptions of combat in the Conan stories shows Howard would have made for an excellent military strategist.

Lovecraft himself would die of stomach cancer in March of 1937.

In addition to Lovecraft’s essay, this issue contains the first appearance of his friend and Psycho author Robert Bloch’s short story, “Funtasy”. It also features two advertisements of Lovecraftian interest including a promotion for the forthcoming release of The Shadow Over Innsmouth (the only book of Lovecraft’s published in his lifetime) as well as an advertisment for the never released final issue of Marvel Tales.
