Scarce Issue of Amateur Press journal The Brooklynite featuring the first appearance of “To An Infant” by HP Lovecraft Written During His Time Living In Brooklyn
Adams, Hazel Pratt, ed. Lovecraft, HP et al. The Brooklynite Vol 15 No 4. Plainfield, NJ. October 1925.
Issue of The Brooklynite, the official organ of the Blue Pencil Club of Brooklyn, New York featuring the first appearance of the poem, “To An Infant” by HP Lovecraft which was later reprinted in issue four of The Arkham Collector (1969).
A scarce remnant of noted horror author HP Lovecraft’s short time in Brooklyn, this issue of The Brooklynite records the August 1925 meeting of the Amateur Journalism group The Blue Pencil Club of Brooklyn meeting at the house of Ernest and Iva Dench where members were introduced to their one month old son and “club baby”, Richard. Members of the Blue Pencil Club all composed poems dedicated to the baby, all of which are reproduced here, but Lovecraft’s was selected as the best in class.
A literary late bloomer, Lovecraft’s most famous writings were still ahead of him, with his earliest published fiction appearing in the amateur press periodical, Home Brew. He moved to Brooklyn in 1924 during his short lived marriage to Sonia Greene, whom he met at the Amateur Press Association Convention in Boston in 1921, and who brought him into contact with the Denches.
Lovecraft famously hated his time in New York. Interestingly, this poem was written shortly after he composed The Horror at Red Hook, also written in August 1925.
